Exam Privacy Policy
Read this before you sit the exam. It takes four minutes and answers the questions candidates ask us most: what is recorded, who watches it, and how long it exists. This page covers exam processing only. Everything else is in our Privacy Policy.
What we collect during your exam
When you start a remote proctored exam, the proctoring software records seven things.
- Webcam video of you for the length of the sitting, used to confirm you are the person who booked and to spot anyone else in the room.
- Microphone audio, so that conversations or read-aloud prompts can be detected.
- Your screen, to see whether another application, tab or device is opened.
- Still snapshots taken at intervals from the webcam feed.
- Browser activity events, such as switching tabs or leaving the exam window.
- Automated flag events raised by the software, for example "second face detected" or "phone detected".
- Proctor review notes, written by a human reviewer when a flagged moment is checked.
Why we collect it
To keep the exam fair. A certificate only means something if every result reflects one person's unaided work. Recording the sitting is how we and our certification partner can stand behind that, and how the credential keeps its standing with employers and accreditation bodies.
How automated checks and human review work
Face, object and audio detection run inside your browser, on your own device. Your face data is not sent to an outside AI vendor for analysis. The software raises flags; it does not make decisions. No exam result or disciplinary decision is ever made by software alone. Every flagged session is reviewed by a trained human proctor, and only a human can confirm a violation or affect a result. If you were flagged for reaching off camera to pick up a pen, a person will look at it and move on.
Identity check
You will be asked to show photo ID to the camera at the start of the sitting. We use it to match you to your booking. It is part of the webcam recording described above.
Legal basis
- Camera, microphone and screen recording: your explicit consent, given on screen before the exam starts.
- Recording as part of delivering the exam you paid for: performance of our contract with you.
- Flag logs and proctor notes: our legitimate interest in exam integrity and in meeting accreditation requirements.
You can decline to consent. If you do, you will not be able to sit the exam remotely. Contact us to ask what alternatives exist.
How long we keep it

Where it is stored and how it is transferred
Exam data is held with infrastructure providers under data processing agreements aligned with the GDPR. Where data leaves the European Economic Area, we rely on Standard Contractual Clauses, a safeguard recognised under EU law. If you need storage locations for a workplace or regulatory reason, ask us and we will tell you.
Who can access it
Authorised personnel involved in exam integrity review and certification decisions. That is the list. Recordings are never shared with employers, other candidates or anyone outside the exam process, and they are used only to verify your sitting.
Your rights
For anything recorded during the exam you can:
- ask for a copy of your exam data;
- ask for it to be deleted, subject to the retention periods above;
- withdraw consent to recording, which ends your ability to sit remotely;
- object to processing carried out under legitimate interest;
- complain to a data protection authority in your country.
