The ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer certificate earned through AI Training Skool is valid for three years. It renews with 32 CPD credits earned over that three-year validity period. You renew by showing logged continuing professional development, not by sitting the exam again.

That works out to about 11 credits a year. Your employer’s ISO/IEC 42001 certificate follows a different clock, covered near the end.

How long is the ISO 42001 Lead Implementer certificate valid?

The ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer certificate is valid for three years. It is issued by the Global AI Certification Council (GAICC), and you renew it with proof of 32 CPD credits over the three-year cycle.

Renewal rules belong to the issuing scheme, not to ISO or the training provider. When you pass, check these points in the renewal terms that come with your certificate:

  • Whether the three years run from the exam date or the date of issue
  • Whether there is a grace period after expiry, and how long it is
  • Whether renewal carries a fee, and how much (build it into budgeting for ISO 42001 Lead Implementer certification)
  • Which activity types are accepted, and any cap per type

The AI Training Skool course is CPD accredited by the CPD Standards Office (UK), which accredits the training activity. It is not an ISO/IEC 17024 personnel certification; 17024 accreditation applies to a certification body and its named schemes, each with its own renewal terms. If your employer requires 17024, you need a scheme that holds it. Accreditation works differently for companies, and the accreditation guide covers checking whether an ISO 42001 certification body is accredited.

What counts as a CPD credit?

A CPD credit is normally one hour of learning. The CPD Standards Office says “one CPD point typically equals one hour of structured learning, though this can vary by profession and accrediting body”. You can read this in the CPD Standards Office guide to CPD. If you are still deciding which level to hold, see the ISO 42001 credential levels compared for Foundation and Lead Implementer side by side.

The same guide sorts CPD into three kinds:

  • Formal learning: structured courses and training, in person or online.
  • Informal learning: learning that “happens naturally as you go about your work”, including mentoring and conferences.
  • Non-formal learning: activities such as reading publications.

Do not assume every kind counts toward your 32 credits. Check the accepted activity list and any caps before you plan a year around one type.

How to log CPD so renewal takes minutes

A CPD log for ISO 42001 renewal should record each activity the week you do it, which makes renewal easiest to prove. A record rebuilt in year three usually comes up short.

The CPD Standards Office lists what a typical CPD record holds. It has the date, the title and provider, the duration in hours or points, and the type of learning. It also has a short reflective note on what you learned and how you will apply it, plus the evidence, such as a certificate or reading notes. A spreadsheet with those six columns is enough.

Keep the evidence in one folder next to the log, so any line can be backed up in a minute if a reviewer asks.

A three-year CPD planner for 32 credits

A 32-credit ISO 42001 renewal is easiest to meet when no single year carries the load. The table below is one example of how to reach 32, not a required split; swap the general activity types for the ones your renewal terms accept.

YearExample credit targetExample activitiesEvidence to keep
Year 111A short structured course on a related standard, such as ISO/IEC 42005 on AI impact assessment; two webinarsCompletion certificates, webinar registration and attendance confirmations
Year 211One conference day on AI governance; reading and summarizing new guidance, such as NIST AI RMF profiles or EU AI Act guidance; mentoring a colleague through exam prepConference agenda and badge scan, your written summary, mentoring dates and topics
Year 310A refresher course; presenting an internal session on your AI management systemCompletion certificate, slide deck with date and audience
Total32 One log file plus one evidence folder

Example only. Totals follow the 32-credit, three-year renewal rule. Source for activity types: CPD Standards Office guide.

Earn slightly more credits early. A shortfall found in year one is easy to close; one found in the last month of year three often is not.

Some holders use the cycle to add a second credential, such as Lead Auditor or Senior Lead Implementer. Check whether those course hours count toward your 32 credits before you enroll. If you are weighing the audit side, start with ISO 42001 Lead Implementer vs Lead Auditor.

Do the course’s 32 CPD and PDU hours count?

The AI Training Skool course awards 32 CPD / PDU hours, and those hours meet the certification exam’s eligibility requirement. Renewal is a separate count of 32 CPD credits earned over the three-year validity period, so log post-exam learning separately.

If you hold a PMI certification, the same hours may also help there, on PMI’s terms. PMI’s Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) Handbook says: “One PDU equals 1 hour of training or giving back.” The handbook sets the PMP requirement at 60 PDUs every three years, at least 35 of them in Education. It also sets a minimum of 8 each in Ways of Working, Power Skills and Business Acumen. Self-paced study falls under the “Online or Digital Media” category. See PMI on earning PDUs, which describes it as “Self-paced learning conducted online or through varied forms of digital media”.

So PMI, not the course provider, decides how many of the 32 hours you can claim and in which area. You report them in CCRS, PMI’s online platform for reporting PDUs. The handbook states that “a percentage of certification holders will be randomly selected for the PMI audit process”. It asks you to keep documentation for at least 18 months after the CCR cycle ends, so keep the course completion certificate.

If you have not started yet, the cycle begins with training. AI Training Skool sells an ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer course that awards 32 CPD / PDU hours, with the proctored exam and two attempts in one payment of US$795.

What happens to your digital badge?

Passing the online proctored ISO 42001 Lead Implementer exam gives you a digital certificate and a shareable badge. You can post the badge on LinkedIn, and employers can check it.

When you receive your badge, check whether it carries an expiry date, whether its verification page shows an expired status, and whether renewal updates the same badge or issues a new one. Assume an employer will look at the date.

Your certificate is not your company’s certificate

Your personal credential and your employer’s ISO/IEC 42001 certificate renew in different ways, which follows from the difference between a personal credential and company ISO 42001 certification. Yours renews on CPD credits. An organization’s certificate covers its Artificial Intelligence Management System (AIMS) and follows an audit cycle: an initial certification audit, annual surveillance audits, and recertification in year three, run by its certification body. Those audits look at the management system and its continual improvement, not at anyone’s CPD log.

Neither affects the other. What the standard asks of a company, and who certifies it, is covered in ISO 42001 explained plainly. The build work before the first audit follows the ISO 42001 implementation steps from mandate to certification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an ISO 42001 Lead Implementer certificate valid for life?

No, it lasts three years, and renewal requires 32 CPD credits over that three-year validity period. Check the dates on your certificate to see whether the three years start at the exam date or the issue date.

How many CPD credits do I need to renew ISO 42001 Lead Implementer?

You need 32 CPD credits over the three-year validity period. That averages about 11 credits a year. The CPD Standards Office says one CPD point typically equals one hour of structured learning, so plan on roughly 32 hours of logged activity.

Do I have to retake the exam to renew?

Not if you meet the CPD requirement. Renewal requires proof of 32 CPD credits over the three-year validity period, not a new exam. Read the renewal terms early in the cycle so you know what happens if credits fall short or the certificate lapses.

Can I use the course’s 32 PDU hours for my PMP?

Possibly, on PMI’s terms. PMI defines one PDU as one hour of training, and PMP holders need 60 PDUs every three years, at least 35 in Education, including at least 8 each in Ways of Working, Power Skills and Business Acumen. Self-paced online learning is claimed as “Online or Digital Media” in CCRS, PMI’s reporting system, and PMI decides what qualifies (PMI’s CCR Handbook and pmi.org, October 2026).

Does my ISO 42001 badge expire?

The certificate behind the badge is valid for three years. Check whether your badge shows an expiry date and how its verification page treats a lapsed credential, and renew before the date an employer can see.

Is an ISO 42001 certificate for a company renewed the same way?

No. A company’s ISO/IEC 42001 certificate is kept through audits by its certification body: annual surveillance audits and a recertification audit in year three. A personal Lead Implementer credential is renewed with 32 CPD credits over three years. One has no effect on the other.
