Most people arrive at this question expecting a gate: do I have enough experience, or am I turned away.
The schemes are not built that way. All three examined here publish levels rather than a single pass or fail, and two of them set your level after the examination, from the experience you can evidence. At those two, experience does not decide whether you may sit. It decides what the certificate says afterwards.
Two Schemes Assign Your Tier After the Exam, One Asks You To Choose It Before
PECB publishes four implementer credentials, separated by the experience each asks you to evidence at application. The assessment requirement is the implementer examination or an equivalent.

Read the first row again. A candidate with no professional experience and no logged project hours can pass the examination and hold the Provisional Implementer credential, then move up as the hours accumulate.
TRECCERT, the scheme carrying ANAB accreditation for this credential, runs the same idea across three rungs: Associate below three years of general experience, Implementer at three years with one year specific and 200 or more implementing hours, and the lead tier at five years with two years specific and more than 400 implementing hours.
GAICC organises the same idea differently, and the difference matters when you buy. Its levels are separate courses with their own contact-hours requirement: Foundation at 16 CPD or PDU hours, the lead course at 32, the senior course at 40. You choose the level when you enrol rather than being placed afterwards.
So the honest answer to “do I qualify” is almost always yes, at some level. The question worth asking is which level, and whether the scheme places you there or asks you to pick it up front.
Your Background Maps to a Tier in Five Steps
Work through these in order. Each is answerable today, without contacting anyone.
Step one. Count your total professional years. Not AI years. Most salaried work in a technical, regulatory or delivery role counts.
Step two. Count the years inside a management system or an AI programme. Information security, privacy, internal quality, regulated delivery and AI governance all count toward this figure.
Step three. Count your logged implementation hours. Logged hours are the figure candidates underestimate most, because they count only work formally labelled ISO. The next section sets out what schemes actually accept.
Step four. Apply your degree. TRECCERT waives one year of general experience for a bachelor’s degree and two years for a master’s. GAICC reduces its requirement from three years to one for a bachelor’s degree or above.
Step five. Read off your rung. Under three years total, you are at Provisional or Associate level and eligible now. Three to five years with some specific experience places you at Implementer. Five years with two specific and 300 to 400 logged hours reaches the lead tier. At a scheme that sets the level by course rather than by application, this same count tells you which course to buy.
If step five puts you a rung below where you want to be, the gap is almost always project hours rather than years, and project hours are the one input you can deliberately build this quarter.
What Counts As the Implementation Experience Schemes Accept
Schemes publish this, and the list is broader than the label suggests. PECB states that qualifying activities must “follow best implementation and management practices” and names seven of them:
– Drafting an AIMS implementation plan
– Managing AIMS implementation projects
– Implementing the AIMS
– Managing documented information
– Implementing corrective actions
– Monitoring the AIMS performance
– Managing an AIMS implementation team
Four of those seven describe work that happens in any management system, not only an AI one. If you have controlled a document set, closed a corrective action or run a monitoring cycle under ISO/IEC 27001 or ISO 9001, that time is countable. Keeping the evidence tidy matters more than the label on the project, and competence and training records sets out the form that evidence takes inside a live system.
The reason schemes ask is structural. ISO/IEC 17024 requires a scheme to be built from “a job or practice analysis” identifying “the tasks for successful performance” and “the required competence for each task” (INAB). A scheme derived from the job has to ask whether you have done the job.
Whether Training Is Mandatory Depends on the Scheme, Not the Standard
Training rules are the difference most buyers miss, and they change what you need before booking anything.
GAICC makes structured training an eligibility condition, asking for at least 32 contact hours, rising to 40 at its senior level. Meet the education and experience rules without the hours and you are still not eligible.
TRECCERT takes the opposite position. Training is offered but not required, and a candidate may buy the examination directly, hold it for twelve months, and sit it when ready.
Neither approach comes from the standard. ISO/IEC 42001:2023 sets requirements for organisations and says nothing about how a person prepares. The training condition is a scheme design choice, so confirm it before assuming a course is optional. The Scheme Verifies Your Experience Record at Application
Certification runs in two stages at most schemes, and the second is where eligibility is tested. You pass the examination first, then apply for the credential, supplying the experience record that places you on a rung.
Three habits make that application straightforward. Keep dates, employer and a one-line description for each block of hours, since schemes ask for the shape of the work rather than a narrative. Map each block to one of the seven activity types above, because the scheme is matching your record against its own job analysis. And expect a code of professional ethics: PECB names “signing the PECB Code of Ethics” in its published credential requirements, and TRECCERT requires candidates to “adhere to the TRECCERT Code of Ethics”.
Certification then runs three years, renewed on logged professional development rather than a second examination. TRECCERT sets this at 90 CPE credits across the cycle.
The Examination Is Assessed Separately From Your Eligibility
Eligibility and examination are separate questions, and clearing the first does not prepare you for the second. The paper is an online proctored exam leaning on scenario-based questions, which reward candidates who can name the record a situation calls for. ISO performs no certification itself, so the scheme you apply to judges both your eligibility and your paper (ISO).
