AI governance jobs in the US pay a median of about $169,000 a year. That is the midpoint of the advertised pay band across 106 US job postings we analyzed on 4 October 2026, and the middle half fall between $136,000 and $204,000. Analyst roles start near $132,000, directors reach about $200,000, and VP and head-of roles sit near $225,000.
Those figures come from the AI Training Skool AI Governance Pay Index, our own count of live postings (the method is at the end of this page). The table below sets the index beside the other AI governance salaries you will see quoted, so you know what each one measures.

AI governance pay by level in the US, October 2026: analyst $132K, senior individual contributor $154K, manager or lead $176K, director $200K, VP or head $225K
How much does AI governance pay at each level?
AI governance pay rises by roughly $20,000 to $25,000 at each step up the ladder, from a $132,000 median for analysts to $225,000 for VP and head-of roles. Each figure is the midpoint of the band the employer advertised.
| Level | Postings | 25th percentile | Median | 75th percentile |
| Analyst, specialist or associate | 50 | $113,000 | $132,000 | $159,000 |
| Senior individual contributor | 23 | $126,000 | $154,000 | $169,000 |
| Manager, lead, principal or staff | 63 | $147,000 | $176,000 | $203,000 |
| Director or associate director | 22 | $170,000 | $200,000 | $226,000 |
| VP, head of, chief or executive director | 21 | $197,000 | $225,000 | $231,000 |

Axial Search shows the same shape using the top of each band instead of the midpoint: $125,000 for junior individual contributors, $244,000 for managers and $268,000 for directors. Read those as the ceiling a strong candidate can negotiate toward, and the midpoints above as where a typical offer lands.
A typical AI governance band is about $50,000 wide, with the top roughly a third above the bottom. That gap is your negotiating room.
Which AI governance roles pay the most?
Legal and risk roles pay the most in AI governance. Counsel roles that cover AI governance or privacy had a median midpoint of $225,000, and AI risk and model risk roles $196,000.
| Role family | Postings | Median midpoint | Middle half |
| Legal and privacy counsel | 20 | $225,000 | $195,000 to $235,000 |
| Risk and model risk | 40 | $196,000 | $154,000 to $215,000 |
| Engineering and architecture | 18 | $164,000 | $153,000 to $189,000 |
| Data governance | 19 | $160,000 | $145,000 to $176,000 |
| GRC, compliance and AI governance programs | 49 | $150,000 | $122,000 to $181,000 |
| Audit and assurance | 11 | $150,000 | $108,000 to $176,000 |
| Privacy programs | 16 | $147,000 | $131,000 to $183,000 |
Source: Pay Index. Audit and data governance rest on fewer than ten postings with pay each, so treat them as indicative.
The IAPP survey points the same way. In the technology sector, it found that technical AI governance roles earned a median of $221,000 and legal and compliance roles $205,000, well above its $151,800 median for AI governance overall.
If you come from GRC, compliance or privacy programs, your starting band is likely to match the $150,000 row. The jump to the top rows comes from adding risk modeling, technical depth or a law license, not from changing your job title.
Moving in from GRC and compliance, privacy, internal audit or project management? Each background enters at a different rung; see the AI governance career ladder and what each rung pays.
How does experience change AI governance pay?
The biggest pay jump in AI governance comes at about seven years of experience. Postings asking for up to six years cluster near $147,000, while those asking for seven to nine years sit near $189,000.
| Experience the posting asks for | Median midpoint |
| 0 to 3 years | $148,000 |
| 4 to 6 years | $147,000 |
| 7 to 9 years | $189,000 |
| 10 years or more | $203,000 |
Based on 90 postings that state both pay and a years-of-experience minimum. Source: Pay Index.
The median posting asks for six years of experience, and five years is the single most common ask. True entry-level roles exist but are rare. Among 179 postings, we found two internships (one in AI governance, one in model risk) and one junior GRC analyst role. If you are getting into AI governance with no direct experience, plan on building evidence in a related role first.
With so few entry-level openings, most people move into AI governance from an existing security, privacy, audit, risk or legal job rather than starting in it. Each background starts from a different point on the AI governance career path, and your years in the feeder role count toward these bands.
Which states pay AI governance roles the most?
California pays the most for AI governance, with a median midpoint of $202,000 in our data and a $250,000 median ceiling in Axial Search’s larger sample.
| State | Pay Index median midpoint | Axial Search median ceiling | Axial Search share of US postings |
| California | $202,000 | $250,000 | 14.1% |
| New York | $172,000 | Not in top five | 13% |
| Virginia | $176,000 | Not reported | Not reported |
| Washington | Too few postings | $229,000 | 4.1% |
| District of Columbia | $149,000 (5 postings) | $225,000 | 2.8% |
Sources: Pay Index; Axial Search, updated 10 September 2026.
New York and Texas post plenty of roles but sit below the top five for pay in Axial Search’s data. At city level, Mountain View, San Francisco and Seattle lead.
Remote roles pay almost the same as on-site ones. Remote postings made up 16% of our sample, with a median midpoint of $166,000 against $169,000 for on-site and hybrid roles. Axial Search found 31% of postings fully remote and 54% hybrid among those that state a work setting.
If the role is based in New York, the ad itself must show the range: the New York State Department of Labor requires employers with four or more employees to list compensation ranges in job advertisements. Colorado, California and Washington have similar rules, and Colorado’s Equal Pay for Equal Work Act also covers remote jobs open to Colorado workers.
Which industries and employers pay AI governance the most?
Regulated industries pay the most for AI governance. In Axial Search’s sector table, life sciences leads with a $272,000 median ceiling, followed by healthcare at $249,000 and technology at $242,000.
| Industry | Median ceiling | Postings |
| Life sciences | $272,000 | 56 |
| Healthcare | $249,000 | 108 |
| Technology | $242,000 | 304 |
| Manufacturing | $237,000 | 54 |
| Professional services | $219,000 | 897 |
Source: Axial Search sector table, October 2026.
Financial services is a large AI governance employer too. In our sample, banks such as JPMorganChase, Bank of America, Mizuho and Synchrony posted AI risk and governance roles, and the highest advertised bands came from technology companies and banks.
Company size moves pay as well. Axial Search reports a $227,000 median ceiling at firms with 5,000 or more employees, against $177,000 at companies with fewer than 500.
Do AI governance jobs pay bonuses and equity?
Bonuses are common in AI governance, and equity is not. The IAPP found that about 7 in 10 respondents received a bonus, rising to 72% in North America. Axial Search found a bonus mentioned in 49% of US postings and equity in 11%, with equity concentrated at principal and C-suite levels.
A posting that does not mention a bonus may still pay one, so ask. Total compensation in senior AI governance roles can run well above the base salary in the band.
What job titles do AI governance roles use?
Most AI governance jobs do not say “AI governance” in the title. Only 78 of the 179 postings in our index (44%) put AI in the job title at all. The rest were titled as GRC, risk, privacy, audit, data governance or counsel roles that list AI governance in the duties.
Titles we found carrying this work include:
- AI Governance Analyst, AI Governance Lead and Head of AI Governance
- AI Risk Analyst, VP of AI Risk Management and Model Risk Advisor
- GRC Engineer, Security GRC Lead and Governance, Risk and Compliance Manager
- Privacy and AI Governance Analyst, Privacy Counsel and Legal Counsel, Privacy, AI and Digital Governance
- Data and AI Governance Architect and Enterprise Data Governance Consultant
- IT Audit Director, AI, Cybersecurity and Emerging Technology
Search by these titles and by duties such as AI inventory, impact assessment and vendor review. To see what each requirement means in practice, read the AI governance officer job description, decoded.
Does a certification raise AI governance pay?
In our data, no single certification is linked to higher AI governance pay. Level, role family, experience and location move pay far more than any credential.
| Mentioned in the posting | Share of postings | Median midpoint when mentioned |
| NIST AI Risk Management Framework | 40% | $175,000 |
| ISO/IEC 42001 | 40% | $168,000 |
| GDPR | 30% | $164,000 |
| CISSP | 27% | $172,000 |
| ISO/IEC 27001 | 27% | $172,000 |
| CISA | 23% | $170,000 |
| EU AI Act | 22% | $176,000 |
| CRISC | 20% | $168,000 |
| CISM | 20% | $176,000 |
| CIPP (any) | 20% | $161,000 |
| AIGP | 13% | $156,000 |
| J.D. or law degree | 12% | $234,000 |
Source: AI Training Skool AI Governance Pay Index, 179 postings. The ISO/IEC 42001 share is higher than the wider market because one of our two searches targeted the standard.
Two results stand out. Postings that name ISO/IEC 42001 pay the same as those that do not ($168,000 against $169,000), so the standard defines the work rather than the pay. And the only requirement linked to a clearly higher median is a law degree, because it marks a counsel role.
If you are choosing between the two credentials named most in AI governance training, see AIGP or ISO 42001 Lead Implementer by background. It sets out what each one certifies and which jobs each fits.
That does not make certifications pointless. The IAPP found that median salary was higher for respondents holding one of its certifications, and higher again for those holding several, while noting this does not prove cause and effect. In an r/cipp discussion about asking for a raise after passing the AIGP, replies described getting no raise for passing the exam alone.
So the useful question is whether a credential gets you into the higher-paying role. Employers name frameworks such as ISO/IEC 42001 and the NIST AI RMF because they want someone who can build the records those frameworks require: an AI system register, an impact assessment, a risk register and a Statement of Applicability. If you want to build those records yourself, self-paced ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer training with the exam and a retake included costs US$795 and covers 32 CPD hours across 16 modules.
How much does a chief AI officer make?
Chief AI officer pay has the widest spread of any AI governance role, and the published figures rest on very small samples. In our index, VP, head and chief roles had a median midpoint of $225,000, and the top AI governance executive band we found was $200,000 to $330,000 for an SVP, Head of AI Governance at Synchrony.
| Source | Figure | Sample |
| AI Training Skool AI Governance Pay Index | $225,000 median midpoint, VP, head and chief roles | 12 postings with pay |
| Glassdoor | $354,391 average for chief AI officer | 6 salary reports |
| US federal Senior Executive Service, 2026 | $151,661 to $228,000 basic pay | OPM pay table |

Federal agencies now need this role too. OMB memo M-25-21, issued 3 April 2025, required each agency to retain or designate a chief AI officer within 60 days. Where a federal post is filled at Senior Executive Service level, basic pay falls in the OPM range above.
Is demand for AI governance professionals growing?
Hiring for AI governance professionals is steady and broad. Axial Search’s hiring analysis counted 1,997 US AI governance postings since January 2026, about 71 new roles a week, with professional services firms posting 32% of them, financial services 15% and technology 13%.
Regulation is a large part of the demand. In our index, 40% of postings named the NIST AI Risk Management Framework and 22% named the EU AI Act, so employers are hiring people who can turn regulatory requirements into working controls. If the framework is new to you, start with the NIST AI RMF compared with ISO 42001. The same work appears under several labels: responsible AI, AI ethics, AI policy, AI compliance and AI risk. Salaries follow the work, not the label.
To see which US organizations already hold the certificate, browse ISO 42001 certified companies in the US.
How does AI governance pay compare with the job you have now?
AI governance usually pays more than the jobs people move in from. The Bureau of Labor Statistics does not track AI governance as its own occupation, so the closest benchmarks are the roles that feed it.
| Occupation | Median pay, May 2025 |
| Compliance officers | $80,730 |
| Management analysts | $101,860 |
| Information security analysts | $129,180 |
| Lawyers | $159,670 |
| Computer and information systems managers | $175,140 |
Source: BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, median pay for May 2025.
These are wages actually paid, while our index uses advertised bands, so the gap looks a little wider than it is. The direction still holds. A compliance officer near the $80,730 median who moves into an analyst-level AI governance role advertised around $132,000 takes a large step up. For an information security analyst near $129,180, the gain starts at the manager level, where the median is $176,000.
Whether a move like that pays for the training it takes depends on the gap between your current pay and the band you are aiming for. Our guide to whether the ISO 42001 Lead Implementer certification is worth it works through that math, including the cases where the training does not pay for itself.
What do AI governance contractors and consultants charge?
A full-time AI governance salary of $169,000 works out to about $81 an hour over a standard 2,080-hour year. Contractors usually charge more than that hourly figure because they cover their own benefits, unpaid time between projects and business costs. One common rule of thumb is to divide the salary by 2,000 hours and add about 30% for benefits, plus more for overhead. Treat that as a starting point, not a market rate.
ZipRecruiter’s estimate of $67.86 an hour for AI governance roles is an employee pay estimate, not a consulting rate.
How to use AI governance pay numbers in a salary negotiation
- Start with the posted band. If the ad shows a range, that is the employer’s own number. If not, ask for it before the first interview.
- Place yourself by level and role family, not title. A GRC engineer doing AI governance work compares with the manager or senior rows above, depending on scope.
- Adjust for state and industry. California, financial services and regulated industries sit at the top. Professional services and lower-cost states sit lower.
- Count your years in the feeder role. Seven or more years of security, privacy, audit or risk work puts you in the higher experience bands.
- Ask about bonus and training budget. About half of postings mention a bonus, and a posting that does not may still pay one. Some employers also fund certifications, so read up on getting your employer to pay for ISO 42001 training before you ask.
- Bring evidence. A register, an assessment or an audit report you produced does more in a negotiation than a list of courses. If you have none yet, start building a small portfolio of that work.
