You can get into AI governance without AI governance experience, but almost never without any work experience. In the AI Training Skool AI Governance Pay Index (179 US Indeed postings, collected in early October 2026), only two roles asked for no experience at all, and both were internships for current students. Analyst-level postings most often asked for about five years in a related field such as compliance, security, audit, risk or privacy.

So the realistic route has two parts. Get into an adjacent job that hires at entry level, then produce AI governance work inside it that you can show. The routes into AI governance by background map where each starting point leads.

What Do Entry-Level AI Governance Postings Actually Ask For?

Entry-level AI governance postings ask for experience. Of the 50 analyst, specialist and associate postings in our index, 43 stated a minimum number of years when we read them by hand, and the typical ask was five years in a related field.

The table shows the experience asked at analyst level in two ways. The first column is the automated field from the Pay Index, which records the smallest number of years a posting names. The second is our hand reading of each posting’s overall minimum, because the automated field sometimes picks up a sub-requirement or misses a figure written as a word.

Three postings show why we read them by hand. Trisura’s Data Governance Analyst posting asks for “Minimum 5 years of overall professional experience, including at least 2 years in data governance”, which the automated field records as two years. Vasion’s Privacy and AI Governance Analyst asks for three to five years in privacy, compliance or legal operations, recorded as five. Salesforce’s Technology Auditor posting asks for “A minimum of 1-2 years experience in Internal Audit, Compliance, or Risk Assurance”, one of the lowest asks in the sample.

The lowest bars outside the internships were in adjacent jobs, not AI governance titles. Two Trust and Safety New Associate roles asked for one year of customer service. Davis Wright Tremaine’s Junior Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC) Analyst asked for “2 years of experience in cybersecurity, compliance, audit, risk management, legal operations, governance, or related fields”, with an advertised band of $94,000 to $122,000.

Pay at this level is good once you are in. Analyst-level AI governance roles had a $132,000 median advertised midpoint, with the middle half between $113,000 and $159,000; see the US AI governance salary data by level for the full ladder.

Which Backgrounds Do Junior AI Governance Postings Name?

Junior AI governance postings name compliance, security, audit, risk, privacy, legal operations and data governance as the experience that counts. None of the 50 analyst-level postings asked for years in AI governance alone; the ones that mentioned AI governance offered it as one option in a list.

Typical wording from the postings:

  • GRC and security compliance: ButterflyMX’s GRC Engineer asks for “3+ years of experience in GRC, information security compliance, or risk management.”
  • Internal audit: Salesforce’s Technology Auditor, as quoted above.
  • Privacy and legal operations: Vasion wants three to five years in a privacy, compliance or legal operations role.
  • Technology governance and vendor work: Dentsu’s AI Governance Analyst asks for “5+ years of experience in technology governance, risk analysis, compliance, vendor management, consulting, or a research-intensive function”.
  • Data governance: Trisura asks for two years in data governance or data management within five years of work.

Read each posting for the list of fields, not the title. “Or related fields” is an invitation, and the duties underneath tell you which related field they mean. Our guide on how to read an AI governance job posting decodes the common duty lines and the evidence each one implies. The employers that name ISO/IEC 42001 in these postings are listed in US companies hiring for ISO 42001 skills.

Five Adjacent Jobs That Lead Into AI Governance

The realistic entry points are jobs that already do governance work and now add AI to it. Each one hires earlier in a career than AI governance does, and each produces records an AI governance hiring manager recognizes.

Adjacent jobWhy it leads to AI governanceWhat it asks for at entryFirst AI governance evidence to build inside it
GRC or compliance analystRuns controls, policies and audits, the same machinery an AI management system usesBachelor’s degree; no related work experience for compliance officers (BLS)Add AI systems to the risk register you already maintain

The compliance door is the widest. The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists a bachelor’s degree, no related work experience and moderate-term on-the-job training for compliance officers, with an $80,730 median wage in May 2025. The gap to the $132,000 analyst median in AI governance is why the step is worth planning.

Set expectations with the federal data too. AI governance has no federal occupation code yet, and the closest profile on O*NET OnLine, Compliance Managers, sits in Job Zone Four, where “a considerable amount of work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is needed” for the occupation.

What a Certification Can and Cannot Do for a Career Changer

A certification can show an employer that you know a framework; it cannot stand in for the years a posting asks for. A professional certification is a designation earned to show you are qualified for a job or task, usually through an assessment that sits apart from the training.

US employers treat certifications as a preference. Across the 179 postings in our index, 44% named any certification and only 3 used “required” wording for one. The IAPP Salary and Jobs Report found higher median pay among respondents holding IAPP certifications, and says that finding does not necessarily show cause and effect. Take that as a reason to pick a credential that matches the work you want, not as a promise of a raise.

Which one fits depends on that work. Compare the main AI governance certifications side by side before you pay for anything. If the work you want is building and running an AI management system, the matching credential is an ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer.

A 90-Day Plan That Produces AI Governance Evidence

A 90-day plan into AI governance should end with work samples, not only a certificate. Each step below produces one record that maps to ISO/IEC 42001 and to a duty line in real postings. Build them for a fictional company, or for your own team’s AI tools if your employer agrees, and never use confidential data.

The NIST AI Risk Management Framework is free to read and was released on 26 January 2023; many US postings use its vocabulary, so it is the right first reading. How to turn the five records into a set a hiring manager will open is covered in an AI governance portfolio that gets interviews.

If you add a credential inside the 90 days, it needs 32 contact hours of structured ISO/IEC 42001 training. Spread over the plan, that is about two and a half hours a week, and a study plan weighted by the four ISO 42001 exam domains shows how to pace it around a job.

Should You Take an ISO 42001 Course With No Experience?

Take an ISO 42001 course without ISO or AI experience if you already work in a professional compliance, risk, security, audit, privacy or technology setting. Our course needs no prior ISO or AI experience, and it is written at an intermediate level for people who already work around controls and policies. With no professional background at all, build that foundation first, for example in a compliance analyst role. Readiness by background is set out in Lead Implementer readiness for GRC, privacy and audit professionals.

If you are in one of those jobs now, ISO 42001 Lead Implementer training that starts from no ISO background costs US$795 and covers 16 modules and 32 CPD hours. Its case study workbook builds the same four records as the plan above (AI register, impact assessment, risk register and Statement of Applicability), and two exam attempts are included. It will not get you a job on its own. Before you enroll, read what the personal ISO 42001 Lead Implementer credential certifies so you know what it proves and what it does not.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Get an AI Governance Job With No Experience?

Rarely as your first job. Of 179 US AI governance postings in our October 2026 Pay Index, only two internships for current students asked for no experience. Analyst-level postings most often asked for about five years in compliance, security, audit, risk or privacy. Start in one of those jobs and build AI governance work samples inside it.

What Entry-Level Jobs Lead to AI Governance?

GRC or compliance analyst, privacy analyst, third-party risk analyst, internal audit associate and data governance analyst are the realistic entry points. The most junior postings in our data asked for one to two years in those fields, and BLS lists no related work experience for compliance officers. Each job produces records AI governance hiring managers recognize.

Do I Need a Degree for AI Governance?

Most postings expect one. A bachelor’s degree was named in 51% of 179 US AI governance postings in our index, and 34% accepted equivalent experience instead. BLS lists a bachelor’s degree as the typical entry education for compliance officers. A law degree matters only for counsel roles.

Is an AI Governance Certification Enough to Get Hired?

No. In our index, 44% of 179 US AI governance postings named any certification and only 3 used “required” wording for one, while most asked for years of related work. A certification helps you show a framework skill; pair it with work samples such as an AI system register and a risk register.

How Long Does It Take to Move Into AI Governance?

Plan on a year or more from a standing start. Analyst-level postings in our data most often asked for five years of related experience, though junior GRC and audit roles asked for one to two. From an adjacent job, a 90-day plan can produce the work samples that make an internal move or first application credible.

What Do Entry-Level AI Governance Jobs Pay?

Analyst-level AI governance roles had a $132,000 median advertised midpoint in our Pay Index, with the middle half between $113,000 and $159,000. A junior GRC analyst role at a US law firm advertised $94,000 to $122,000. Compliance officers earned an $80,730 median in May 2025, according to BLS.
